It’s now less than two months until the release ofĀ Every Given Day–a perfect time toĀ Pre-OrderĀ the book–and time I shared the inspiration behind this close-to-my-heart story.
Inspiration was two-fold: my eight-year-old granddaughterās heroic journey through Type 1 diabetes after experiencing a bout with Covid and a viral infection in 2020, and the life-saving discovery of insulin in 1922. Similarities between modern-day Covid and the 1900s Spanish Flu that ravaged the world were remarkableāhow they attacked the body, how patients were treated, how or if they recovered, and how the world reacted. When I learned that there was a rise in diabetes following both pandemics, I was intrigued. The remarkable difference is that today we have insulin to treat diabetes. In 1920 diabetes was a death sentence.
One hundred years and dramatic changes in medicine, technology, transportation, social mores and so much more separated the pandemics. One thing remains the same: our need to surrender our loved ones and ourselves to Almighty God when life grows desperate and out of our control. Gwen and her nephew, Alistair, despite knowing nothing of faith, are forced to make that dramatic and nail-biting journey in the early 1920s.
Next month Iāll share more of the discovery of insulinālife restoring help for those diagnosed with diabetes. Iām thrilled each time I recount the introduction of this wonder medication!
